What does drive time cost your team?
Technicians are paid while they drive, and the van burns fuel the whole way. Enter your numbers to see the yearly cost of drive time, and what a shorter day on the road would be worth.
Yearly cost of drive time
$88,500
2,000 paid driving hours per year
Saved with 15% less driving
$13,275
300 hours back for billable work
How it's calculated
- Labor per day = drive minutes ÷ 60 × labor cost.
- Vehicle cost per day = miles × cost per mile.
- Yearly cost = (labor + vehicle) × technicians × work days. Savings apply your reduction to that total.
Route optimization is the usual way to cut drive time. Read the route optimization guide or price your visits with the pricing calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much does technician drive time cost?+
Multiply each technician's daily driving hours by their loaded labor rate, add miles driven times your fuel and wear cost per mile, then multiply by technicians and work days. For many service teams it is one of the largest costs that never appears on an invoice.
What is a realistic drive time reduction from route optimization?+
It depends on how routes are built today. Teams that schedule by hand or by customer request usually have the most to gain. Use your own estimate in the calculator and compare it with a trial of route optimization on your real schedule.
What cost per mile should I use?+
Use your own fuel, maintenance and tire costs divided by miles driven. If you track only fuel, the result will understate the true vehicle cost of driving.
Does this calculator collect my data?+
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is sent or stored.
